March 14th Nationwide School Walkout
Posted on 03/08/2018
Dear Lemon Grove Parents, Community and Staff,

The school shooting in Parkland, Florida has had a profound impact on all of us, allowing for conversations about school safety. There is a widely publicized nationwide school walkout for 17 minutes at 10:00 a.m on March 14th, in honor of the 17 victims who lost their lives.

LGSD respects students' First Amendment right, under federal and state law, to freedom of speech in the school environment. The March 14th event is entirely student-driven and voluntary- it is not sponsored by our schools. In accordance with state law, we will expect:
  • All activities must be peaceful and respectful
  • At no time may students leave campus
  • Students must stay in the designated areas on campus, so as not to disrupt a safe and orderly educational environment for all students and school staff
  • Students may not exceed the break period and must return to class when instructed by school staff

The following may occur at your child's school site at the discretion of school staff:
  • Safe School Climate assemblies
  • Opportunities for students to safely and respectfully express their views such as classroom circles, leadership groups, and structured academic discourse
  • Promotion of civic engagement and inquiry around school safety.
  • Designated time and space for students to gather

As with any important issue, we encourage you to have a conversation with your student and to make your own expectations clear to your child, related to non-school sponsored activities and the proactive activities that may occur. Principals and school staff, who have been approached by students, will continue to talk with them about this matter and will maintain open lines of communication with parents.

Lemon Grove School District's success has been driven by talented teachers and support staff, an active parent community, and engaged and passionate students. Together, we will continue this as we navigate important and difficult issues in respectful and constructive ways
