August 5, 2014                                                          ESPAÑOL

Dear Lemon Grove Academy Students and Families,

Welcome to the 2014/15 school year at Lemon Grove Academy for the Sciences and Humanities! The staff and I look forward to an exciting year for our students. As you plan the next couple weeks you will want to pay close attention to the following dates and times:

As mentioned above, the grade level orientations are scheduled for August 18th and 19th. During this time students will be able to pick up their class schedule.  The student’s schedule will include the classes the student is enrolled in as well as the room numbers.  I encourage students to walk around the campus during the orientation to become acquainted with the location of the classrooms. This will help make the first day of school smooth and effortless.  Please remember that 7th graders must have had the TDAP vaccination and a record of the vaccination must be on file with the health clerk.  Students who have yet to turn in documentation of the TDAP vaccination will need to meet with the health clerk.

Our PTA will also be selling P.E. uniforms during the orientation.  The price for the uniform is $16.00 if purchased together or $10:00 for the shirt and $8.00 for the shorts if purchased separately. Families who sign up for PTA will receive a $2.00 discount for the t-shirt and shorts combo.

Along the lines of clothing, I know many families will be doing back to school shopping in the near future.  Please keep in mind the school’s dress code.  Lemon Grove Academy is focused on learning and preparing students for their futures.  With this said, our expectation is for students to “dress for success.”  Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing including: shirts that fully cover the shoulders, back, and midriff area, shorts and skirts that are at least to the mid-thigh, closed-toe shoes, nonintrusive jewelry (e.g. large hoop earrings and large belt buckles are not permitted), no inappropriate messages or images on clothing, and no sagging or baggy pants. For more information about the dress code, please review the handbook that is posted on line.  Unfortunately, students who are not following the dress code will be required to have a family member bring appropriate clothing to school. Repeated offenses will result in school-based consequences. Please help us avoid this situation by committing to the “dress for success” school expectation.

I am pleased to share that the district is able to continue the no-cost breakfast program for all students this year.  Families will need to complete the National Lunch Program Form to determine the amount their student will need to pay for lunch.  This form will be sent home the first week of school.  Please plan on completing the form and returning it as quickly as possible to determine eligibility.

Many students inquire about riding bikes or skateboards to school.  Although I encourage students to ride their non-motorized bike or skateboard to school, there are clear expectations for these students. Students must wear appropriate helmets, adhere to the bike and skateboard laws, and ensure that they are being safe at all times. There are bike and skateboard racks for students to lock their items to on the north side of campus.

Finally, I encourage parents to be a part of the amazing things that are happening on and around LGA.  Here are a few ways to be involved: become a member of the Parent-Teacher Association, School Site Council, and/or English Language Advisory Committee meetings, assist with the after school classes, assist in the office or classrooms and/or help out with the many school events and community service days.  I assure you that you will enjoy being a part of the backbone of our school; our incredible parent volunteers.

The arrival of a new school year always brings much excitement. behalf of the Lemon Grove Academy Staff, thank you for your partnership and the opportunity to educate your child. This is a privilege that we fully enjoy and cherish!

Sincerely,
