Dear San Miguel Elementary Parents and Guardians,
It's hard to believe but it's that time of the year again - the beginning of a new school year. Welcome Back! I hope each one of you had a wonderful and relaxing summer! I know that you are now ready to Imagine, Believe and Achieve greatness again this year.
Your children receive the best education when you and our dedicated teachers work as a team. It's a parents enthusiasm, support and involvement that inspires children to do their best; and a teacher's ability to teach what they need to learn. Together we can achieve wonderful things. Please consider giving 5 hours of volunteer time this year, as it is our goal to increase our parent involvement and get EVERY parent possible helping to raise the our San Miguel achievement goals.
There's a lot of excitement ahead of us; including 7 new teachers to meet, many new books to read, new Art lessons to explore, a new math adoption (Go Math) to master, new Common Core State Standards to learn, and new PeaceBuilder friends to meet...and I look forward to experiencing these exciting time together.

Principal’s Message- Heidi Bergener Español
It is my pleasure to welcome you to San Miguel Elementary! As the principal of San Miguel, I, like many of you, have come to realize what a truly special place San Miguel is. Whether you’ve been part of the San Miguel community for three or four years, three or four months, or this is your first visit to our school, you are now part of a special community that places a high priority on quality teaching and learning, a community where good character matters, and a community that, above all else, values its children.
A walk through our classrooms will reveal a dedicated and professional staff that has high expectations for themselves and their students. Our teachers are committed to their own professional growth and learning, they are skilled at what they do, and they combine this skill with a love for teaching and for children. Helping children become life-long learners is a goal toward which we continually strive by instilling a strong desire to learn in our students. Guided reading, writing workshops, inquiry-based science and mathematics, and hands-on social studies are key components of our program and provide our students with opportunities to demonstrate the competencies needed to contribute and to succeed in a changing world.
But this is only one side of the equation. Our talented, thoughtful, and hard-working children are another reason why this school community is a special one. Beyond the academic work they do in their classrooms, with the guidance and support of their parents and teachers, our students are learning to become responsible citizens who demonstrate the San Miguel behavioral expectations…Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible….Be a Peace Builder!
Finally, I would argue that what makes our community so special is the quality of the relationships that exist between home and school. Our parents log hundreds of volunteer hours each school year, and they plan engaging and exciting activities for families to share with one another. Most importantly, however, our parents and teachers trust one another and work closely with one another to ensure we’re all doing what’s best for our children.I’ve said this many times before, but I am very honored and privileged to serve as the principal of San Miguel Elementary, and I am looking forward to making this year and future years exciting, engaging, and successful for all of our children. Finally, I’m sure that if you haven’t discovered this already, you’ll come to see what I see—that the San Miguel community truly is a special place
